Bobcat

In construction, "Bobcat" is synonymous with skid steer. That's because they are credited with inventing the world's first skid steer more than 60 years ago. They also have one of the largest selections of skid steers and are one of the best-selling companies.

Bobcat has three series of wheeled skid steer loaders: the M2-Series, M3-Series, and R-Series. The M2 series is more fuel efficient, quiet, and has non-DPF engines. The M3 skid series has bigger cabs for operators, wider ranges of attachments, and very easy maintenance features. Lastly, the R-Series has more powerful hydraulics and has increased uptime. The M3-Series and R-Series are Bobcat's newest models of the skid steer. However, they are mostly small and medium-sized machines. If you're looking to do demolition jobs or anything with extremely heavy lifting, the Bobcat M2-Series is probably your best bet.

How much does a Bobcat skid steer weigh?

With their wide range of skid loaders, Bobcat has skid steers weighing between 2,892 pounds to 10,237 pounds. The Bobcat S70 model is the smallest and most narrow model in the world, making it great for small, indoor projects that have limited room to maneuver. The Bobcat S850 is their largest model weighing 10,237 pounds.

The Most Important Skid Steer Specifications

The most common skid steer specs for contractors to be aware of are ROC, operating weight, engine horsepower, lift height, length, width, and type of lift path. Other specifications that could matter include whether the machine has high-flow or standard-flow hydraulics.

Rated Operating Capacity (ROC)

Knowing the rated operating capacity (ROC) of a skid steer is crucial for contractors as it ensures safe operation by preventing overloading, which can lead to equipment tripping and accidents. It also helps in selecting the appropriate machine for specific tasks, enhancing efficiency and productivity on the job site. The ROC is normally 30 to 50 percent of the tipping load limit which is the amount of weight that the skid steer could carry without tipping.

Operating Weight

Understanding the operating weight of a skid steer is important because it affects the machine's stability, maneuverability, and the ground pressure it exerts. This knowledge helps in planning for transportation logistics and ensuring the skid steer can operate safely and efficiently on various surfaces without causing damage.

Horsepower

Knowing the horsepower is vital for contractors as it determines the machine's power and ability to perform demanding tasks. Higher horsepower enables better performance in tough conditions, ensuring the skid steer can handle heavy loads and challenging terrains efficiently. A higher horsepower is often directly correlated with a higher lift capacity.

Lift Height at Pin

Knowing the lift height at the pin of a skid steer is essential for contractors as it indicates how high the machine can lift materials. This information helps in selecting the appropriate skid steer for tasks involving loading and unloading materials into trucks or onto elevated surfaces, ensuring efficient and effective operation.

Dimensions (Width and Length)

Understanding the machine's dimensions, including the length and width of a skid steer, is important as it determines the machine's ability to navigate through tight spaces and its suitability for specific job sites. This information aids in planning for storage and maneuverability, ensuring the skid steer can operate efficiently in confined or restricted areas. The length of the machine often factors in the bucket while width does not. This is because there is a distinct difference between the length of the machine with the bucket on while there is only a marginal difference in the width when the bucket is attached.

Type of Lift Path

There are two types of lift paths on skid steers: radial lift and vertical lift. Radial lift machines are better for digging and grading, while vertical lift machines are ideal for loading and lifting to higher heights, helping contractors choose the right skid steer for specific job requirements.

The Three Sizes of Skid Steer Frames

There are three different skid steer sizes: small-frame, medium-frame, and large-frame. The size of a skid steer is determined by the ROC of the machine. Small-frame skid steers have ROCs under 1,750 pounds. The medium-framed ROC range is between 1,750 to 2,200 pounds. And lastly, the large-frame skid steer ROC range is anything over 2,200 pounds.

Small-framed skid steers are used for smaller, more confined jobs that don't require lots of heavy lifting and power. For example, they're great for landscaping projects, interior demolition, and underground construction because those spaces are often more restricted. Because of their small size and ease with navigating corners and tight spaces, small-frame skid steer loaders are very common for small-scale projects. They're also much easier to haul from site to site which can help save on costs when job sites may require less machinery or time.

Mid-frame models are the most commonly used size in construction and landscaping. That's because they're a safe bet for getting the job done on any site with the power and ROC they provide. For the most part, they can fit on most residential or suburban projects which makes them great for DIY, landscaping, or homebuilding. However, if you are concerned, it's best to check the dimensions.

Lastly, there are the large-framed models. These machines are great when moving large amounts of dirt, gravel, or bricks and require attachments like mulchers, augers, or blades because they require more horsepower. You will also need large-framed skid steers for most road building, demolition, and drilling jobs because of the heavy materials and demand for power and force.

What is the Biggest Skid Steer?

The biggest skid steers currently are the GEHL 420V and the Manitou V4200, which are essentially the same model because they're owned by the same parent companies. They both have ROCs of 4,200 pounds and operating weights of 11,665 pounds.

How Wide Are Skid Steers?

Skid steers come in a variety of widths with the most narrow model being the Bobcat S70 at 35.5 inches and the widest model being 79 inches, which includes several models across Manitou, John Deere, and Bobcat.

How Much Does a Skid Steer Weigh?

Skid steers have a variety of weights depending on their size. However, the lightest model is the Bobcat S70 which weighs 2,892 pounds and the heaviest models are the GEHL 420V and Manitou V4200 which weigh 11,665 pounds.
