The Ultimate Mini Excavator Size Chart and Spec Guide

Updated June 19, 2024

Great for jobs like landscaping, home renovations, installing pools, demolishing small buildings, and much more, the mini excavator is one of the most commonly used pieces of construction equipment. They go by many names including mini ex, compact excavator, mini digger, and small excavator.

This article serves as a complete mini excavator spec guide. We'll break down the common sizes, the current models from the top mini excavator brands in the industry, and why the specs highlighted in this guide are some of the most important to know before renting or purchasing.

Table of Contents

How Much Do Mini Excavators Weigh?

Mini excavators will have operating weights between 2,000 to 22,000 pounds, or 1 to 11 tons. However, there are often considered to be three sizes of mini excavator models: small, medium, and large. Small mini excavators have operating weights ranging from 2,000 to 10,000 pounds, medium excavators range between 10,000 and 18,000 pounds, and large mini excavators exceed 18,000 pounds.

The determining factor between whether an excavator is considered a mini or a regular excavator is the blade on the front. If it has a blade, it's a mini excavator. If there's no blade, it is considered a full-size crawler excavator.

Weight, Specs, and Size Charts for Every Brand of Mini Excavator

Bobcat

With one of the largest selections in the industry, Bobcat provides a wide range of mini excavator options for any small or medium-scale landscaping or construction project. With long-arm options available on the E35, Bobcat is an excellent choice if you know the exact specs required for your project, as they're very likely to have a model that will fit your needs perfectly. They also have models available with zero tailswing for tight, compact spaces, as well as machines with conventional tailswing for jobs that require more heavy lifting and balance.

The Bobcat E10e and E19e are their two electric models that have zero emissions, reduced noise and are made for indoor work.

How much do Bobcat mini excavators weigh?

Bobcat mini excavators weigh between 2,593 pounds and 19,600 pounds. The lightest model is the Bobcat E10 and the heaviest is the Bobcat E88.

The large blade attachments and quick couplers make them efficient at switching out attachments and increasing versatility. However, with a max dig depth of 14 feet and 1 inch, they don't reach as far as some other brands in this guide.

The HX17AZ, HX27AZ, and HX55ACR are their newest models and the specs have not been fully released yet.

These machines are consistently high performing and reliable and provide a wide variety of models for small-medium-sized projects. The one downside of Takeuchi mini excavators is that most of them seem to have some sort of tailswing radius. According to their website, there are limited options with zero and reduced tailswings, as denoted by the "R" in the model name. They are one of the few brands with an electric model available with the TB20e.

How much do Takeuchi mini excavators weigh?

Takeuchi mini excavators weigh between 2,535 pounds and 18,810 pounds. The lightest model is the Takeuchi TB210R and the heaviest is the Takeuchi TB280FR.

The Most Important Mini Excavator Specs

Now that we've covered each brand and their models, we mention why operating weight, dig depth, dump height, engine power, width, and tailswing are the most important specs for contractors to consider when renting or purchasing mini excavators.

Operating Weight

The operating weight of a mini excavator is crucial for contractors to know as it affects the machine's stability, maneuverability, and transport logistics. A properly weighted excavator ensures better stability during digging and lifting tasks, minimizing the risk of tipping. It also gives an understanding of how effective it will be at moving the type of materials on a site. Overall, the right operating weight enhances safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness on the job.

Dig Depth

The digging depth of a mini excavator is important because it determines the maximum depth the machine can efficiently excavate. This capability is essential for tasks such as foundation work, trenching, and utility installations, ensuring the excavator can meet the specific requirements of the project. A sufficient dig depth reduces the need for repositioning the machine, improving job efficiency and productivity. Therefore, choosing an excavator with the appropriate dig depth is vital for completing projects accurately and on time.

Dump Height

The dump height of a mini excavator matters to contractors because it dictates the maximum height at which the machine can unload materials. This is crucial for tasks that involve transferring excavated materials into trucks, containers, or over barriers. Adequate dump height ensures efficient loading operations and prevents spillage, thus optimizing workflow and reducing labor costs. Selecting an excavator with the right dump height is essential for maintaining smooth and efficient material handling on site.

Engine Power

Engine power is critical because it directly influences the performance and efficiency of a mini excavator. A more powerful engine allows the machine to handle tougher materials, perform more demanding tasks, and operate attachments effectively. This results in faster completion of projects and the ability to tackle a wider range of jobs. Consequently, choosing an excavator with sufficient engine power ensures reliability, versatility, and higher productivity on the job site.

In electric mini excavators, engine power is particularly important as it determines the machine's operational efficiency and battery performance. Adequate power ensures that the electric excavator can perform demanding tasks with comparable strength and endurance to traditional diesel models. Additionally, efficient power management in electric engines can extend battery life, reducing downtime for recharging and increasing overall productivity.

Width

The width of a mini excavator is important because it affects the machine's ability to access and operate in confined spaces. A narrower width allows the excavator to maneuver through tight passages, such as gates, doorways, and between structures, making it ideal for urban environments and indoor projects. Many contractors know the dimensions of different spaces on their projects to get an understanding of what equipment can fit where. This versatility enhances the machine's usability across a broader range of job sites. Consequently, choosing the right width ensures the excavator can work efficiently in restricted areas without compromising on performance.

Tailswing

Tailswing impacts the choice of a mini excavator because it affects the machine's ability to operate in confined spaces without the risk of collision. Minimal or zero tailswing means the machine's rear does not extend beyond its tracks when rotating, allowing for safer and more efficient operation near walls, buildings, and other obstacles. This is particularly important in urban areas or on crowded job sites where space is limited. Therefore, selecting an excavator with an appropriate tailswing design enhances safety, versatility, and productivity in restricted environments.

How Much Do Mini Excavator Attachments Weigh?

The weight of a mini excavator can change depending on the attachment equipped. However, mini excavator attachment weights can vary significantly depending on the type and function of the attachment. Here are some examples of typical weights for common attachments:

  • Buckets: Standard digging buckets generally weigh between 100 and 500 pounds, depending on their size and capacity.
  • Augers: Augers typically weigh between 150 and 400 pounds, depending on the length and diameter of the auger bit.
  • Hydraulic Breakers: These can range from 300 to 1,500 pounds, depending on their size and impact energy.
  • Grapples: Weigh between 200 and 1,000 pounds, depending on their type and capacity.
  • Thumbs: Hydraulic or mechanical thumbs usually weigh between 100 and 500 pounds.
  • Compactors: These attachments can range from 500 to 1,200 pounds, depending on their design and compaction force.
  • Rippers: Typically weigh between 150 and 500 pounds, depending on their size and strength.

The weight of the attachment affects the excavator's stability and operational efficiency, so it's important for contractors to consider this when selecting and using attachments.
